OTHER MISSIONS

Gather, Inspire, Act

We believe that the presence of God can be felt when we Gather together. And when we learn about the need for justice and compassion in the world through films, books and conversations, we are Inspired to Act. So in the spirit of keeping alienation and divisiveness at bay, we Gather monthly to watch a film, enjoy refreshments and respectful, encouraging discussions. Watch the website and our Facebook page for announcements of coming films or contact Jeanne to be added to the email list.

Some Films We Have Enjoyed Together:

  • “1984” George Orwell’s dark dystopia of a world where truth is distorted and war is never-ending.

  • “13th”  Ava DuVernay’s documentary about how a system of racial injustice has been established on our nation since the 13th Amendment has made it legal to profit from prison labor.

  • "The Great Dictator” Charlie Chaplin’s perceptive portrayal of a Fascist dictator’s rise to power.

  • “Disturbing The Peace”  Documentary of Israeli and Palestinian soldiers and family members uniting to speak up for peace.

  • “Cast The First Stone”  Inspiring documentary shows falsely convicted inmate Gary Tyler direct a Passion Play inside the walls of Angola Prison in Louisiana.

Relay For Life

In May we contributed a team to the Foothills Relay for Life - a terrific community event that raised over $100,000 to find a cure for cancer. Too many of our members' lives have been touched by cancer. Read our touching and entertaining Relay for Life Twitter Journal.

Ecumenical Council of Pasadena

We support the best run Food Pantry, Women's Room, and Bad Weather Shelter in the San Gabriel Valley, coordinated by the Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Churches. Check it out at www.ecpac.net.

Montrose Peace Vigil

We also collaborate with the Montrose Peace Vigil, showing up at their Friday night vigils on the corner of Honolulu and Ocean View and marching with their Peace Train in Montrose's Annual Holiday Parade on the first Saturday of December.

Pasadena Palm Sunday Peace Parade

The Peace Parade is an outdoor worship event that proclaims God's Reign of Peace and Justice for all time. CVUMC has been a sponsor and our families have walked in the Pasadena parade for ten years. We enjoy the way it brings Jesus’ walk into Jerusalem into our present world where the struggle for peace and justice continues. This year’s theme will be “The Poor People’s Campaign.” For more information, check out their Facebook page.

Strength for the Journey

Strength for the Journey is a week long camp in beautiful local mountains that welcomes people who are living with HIV/AIDS. The camp is sponsored by the California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church through their HIV/AIDS Task Force which one of our former Pastors, Pastor Steve Steve, chairs. He has been the spiritual director at various camps for over thirty years. The camp provides an atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement and good humor. Campers experience physical and spiritual healing as they renew connections with each other and Creation. CVUMC supports the camp with prayers, gifts and volunteering.
